Pedestrian Safety (Junior)

Have your students plan and lead buddies from Primary grades on a walk around the neighbourhood and accompanying party, giving them the opportunity to share their expertise on road safety.

A group of young students walks on the sidewalk in Summer

Grade Level: Grades 4 – 6

Subject: Traffic and Road Safety

Time Required: 50-60 Minutes

Overall Expectations:

  • HPE – Healthy Living Strand
  • HPE – Physical Activity (DPA)
  • LL – Language and Literacy

Notes

  • Appropriate trip forms should be completed for this lesson.
  • Attention should be paid to party supplies and classroom allergies (for example, bringing certain foods to school, latex allergies with balloons).
  • Photos could be taken to create a celebration display board of the event.

Introduction/Minds On:
(10 minutes)

  • Explain to students that they will be creating a safety walk expedition for their primary safety buddy. Brainstorm safety rules and risks (Appendix 4) that should be communicated during the walk.

Development/Action:
(30 minutes)

  • Divide the class into small groups, encouraging students to select their own work group.
  • Each group will complete one of the required tasks, including:
    • Write a letter to the primary student’s parents (for example, a typed letter outlining the route, map and rules). (Appendix 1);
    • Identify what to tell their buddy about safety rules during the walk. (Appendix 4);
    • Plan a healthy celebration following the walk. (Appendix 2).
    • Note: Rotate each group during the activity and review the tasks (identifying safety messages, how to write a letter, and characteristics of a healthy party).
  • Have each group share its work with the class.
  • Have students meet with their safety buddy to explain the walking rules and provide them with the parent letter.
  • Complete the walk and celebrate.

Consolidation/Debrief:
(10 minutes)

Using Appendix 2: Planning a Healthy Celebration, as a guide, incorporate a review of the safety rules into your celebration. Partners can earn points for correct answers and you might determine a safety buddy champion.

Teacher Assessment

Use Appendix 3 from this lesson to assess students. You will be assessing each student’s safety, active participation and living skills during the walk.

Learning Outcomes
