School Activities

Engage your student body with school- or division-wide activities designed to get students excited and informed about road safety. Find age-appropriate activities for your students’ grade level below.


Primary

  • Invite local police or emergency room staff to speak to the school during Road Safety, Bus Safety or Bike Safety Week.
  • Safety Poster Contest – Have classes create and display posters in the hallways. Principals or local law enforcement can judge the posters for a prize (e.g., a healthy classroom party).
  • Invite students to participate in a Road Safety Jingle contest. Students can sing their jingles over the PA system during announcements.
  • Invite local police to set up a pedestrian safety activity during an outdoor play day.
  • Safety buddies – have students pair up with older grades and go on a community walk, sharing safe practices.

Junior

  • Invite local police or emergency room staff to speak to the school during Road Safety, Bus Safety or Bike Safety Week.
  • Invite a bike collision survivor or a parent who has lost a child to a bike collision to speak to the school during Road or Bike Safety Weeks.
  • Safety Poster Contest – Have classes create and display posters in the hallways. Principals or local law enforcement can judge the posters for a prize (e.g., a healthy classroom party).
  • Invite local police officers to set up a bike safety activity during an outdoor play day.

Intermediate

  • Invite a victim of impaired driving to speak to the school during Road Safety Week.
  • Conduct a writing contest in which students write an essay on the importance of seat belt use or other safe driving behaviours. The author of the best essay receives a prize or other recognition.
  • Conduct a walkathon to raise awareness. Students might walk around the school or neighbouring roadways, with assistance from the local police service.
  • Create road signs to stress the importance of reading, understanding and following signs.
  • Conduct a Karaoke Day, using songs that have words related to roads and trails.
  • Integrate daily physical activity (DPA) by creating station games using road signs for particular physical activities.

Secondary

  • Invite a victim of drunk driving to speak to the school during Road Safety Week.
  • Have all graduating students promote a “Safe Prom” event focusing on the dangers of drug and alcohol misuse.
  • Conduct a writing contest in which students write an essay on the importance of seat belts or other safe driving behaviours. The author of the best essay receives a prize or other recognition.
